Notable discoveries at the LA Art Book Fair

The artist Yoshitomo Nara, and his publisher, Blum and Poe, LA/NY/Tokyo (www.blumandpoe.com). One of Nara’s recurring themes is a small girl with wide, intense eyes. Her facial structure resembles Mei from My Neighbor Totoro, from Studio Ghibli. Put Mei togther with Nara’s girl and you get a cute but probably ferocious kid, who looks like a runaway or foster child (in a couple of pictures, she’s smoking a cigarette).
Besides Nara’s books, Blum and Poe had a number of other distinguished-looking books on their list.

They have recently published Donald Judd Writings, a paperback of 4.25″ x 7.25″ and 1048 pages on thin, high-quality stock. It has a bright orange cloth cover, slightly rough, which is glued onto the cover stock on the outside and inside covers. It was really a pleasure to hold. I don’t think I will be able to resist buying it.
